Social Skills

Social skills are an integral part of children’s ability to participate in social activities and form friendships with their peers. Social skills are the ability to play and interact with others, and include:

  • Early play skills such as turn taking and sharing;

  • Developing different play styles including imaginative play;

  • Using conversation skills including taking turns, staying on topic and answering questions;

  • Understanding others’ perspectives, including their thoughts and feelings;

  • Reading and using tone of voice, facial expression and body language;

  • Demonstrating flexible thinking;

  • Identifying unspoken social rules or expected choices;

  • Navigating complex social situations, including compromising and negotiating.

At CommuniKids Speech Therapy, our speech pathologists work alongside clients and their families to work towards social communication goals. We aim to work collaboratively with the child’s social network to support building of strong social relationships.
