Literacy

Literacy is the ability to read and write. Children with strong early literacy skills such as rhyming and identifying syllables often have greater success as they begin reading and writing. Difficulties with literacy skills can make it challenging for children to keep up within the classroom as they progress through school. By building literacy skills, children will be able to:

·      Identify rhymes, syllables, and first, middle and last sounds of spoken words;

·      Quickly and accurately identify letter sounds;

·      Identify ‘sight’ or ‘high frequency words;

·      Read and write words with simple and complex spelling patterns;

·      Create sentences and longer texts with accurately spelt words.

At CommuniKids Speech Therapy, our speech pathologists use the phonics programs SoundsWrite to support children in becoming confident readers and writers. We work with children who require explicit teaching of literacy skills as well as children who have learning difficulties such as dyslexia.
