Language

Language is the ability to understand and use meaningful, well-structured sentences to communicate to others. Developing an understanding of language and ability to use well-structured, vocabulary rich language allows children to not only communicate, but also supports social relationships and ability to achieve success at school. Language refers to a variety of output methods, including verbal language, gesture, sign language, use of visuals and communication devices. By building language skills in speech therapy, children will be able to:

·      Follow instructions at home and school;

·      Understand and answer questions of varying complexities;

·      Understand and apply morphology of words to mark grammatical components of sentences such as plurals and past tense;

·      Understand and use a wide and complex vocabulary;

·      Create structured, concise oral narratives;

·      Identify literal and hidden (inferential) meanings in spoken and written language;

·      Write well-structured, vocabulary rich texts including narratives, reports and essays.

At CommuniKids Speech Therapy, our speech pathologists support children in developing these skills so they can communicate confidently in everyday home, school and social environments.
